Saskatchewan Roughriders

Marcus Crandell / Kerry Joseph

I can't wait to see which quarterback runs the offense with the most effieciency as camp continues.  It has been suggested that Kerry Joseph firmly has a grip on the number one spot. He may start camp in the number one spot, but if it is a throw oriented attack, don't underestimate Marcus Crandell.

I don't mean to feed an early quarterback chatter, but it is something to keep an eye on.

Day One Recap

Hundreds of fans filled the Mosaic Stadium stands for the first of the 2-a-day work-outs this morning. Some fans were waiting in lawnchairs out in the parking lot before 8 o'clock this morning. "There were a couple guys who got dinged up today" coach Kent Austin said afterward. But the weather was perfect for the start of the team's first training camp inside Mosaic Stadium in recent memory which is being allowed by the new fieldturf. In all 79 players are working out with the football team at the start of camp.

And So It Begins!

Veterans and rookies alike disperse amongst their respective positional coaches for Sunday's opening day of training camp.

Training Camp Battles

Now that rookie cuts have been made, it is time for main camp to begin with several interesting battles. In no particular order

1) 3rd String QB: Drew Tate vs Darian Durant. I admit I am surprised to see Chad Friehauf get cut and I'm wondering if there is another reason for this as Friehauf looked alright at rookie camp. It wouldn't surprise me if Friehauf is still kicking around and shows up again. In the meantime, Tate and Durant will battle to hold the clipboard. I give the nod to the former Iowa standout.

First Round of Rider Cuts

The Saskatchewan Roughriders released the following 8 players Saturday afternoon, the day before training camp starts:

Import QB Chad Friehauf

Import QB Omarr Conner

Import DB Michael Gholar

Import DB Eric Whitfield

Import DB R.J. Oliver

Import WR Josh Tinch

Non-import RB Josh Martyr

Non-import LB Joe Barnes

New DB, No Ladouphyous McCalla

A new defensive back wearing number 35 appeared on the field at Roughrider rookie camp Friday. When coach Kent Austin was asked who that player was, he responded by saying "I'm not sure if we've announced that yet so I'll have to defer you to Eric on that one." Austin also indicated the team did have discussions with former defensive back Ladouphyous McCalla about coming out of retirement to help patch up a free agent depleted secondary, but the chances of McCalla returning after sitting out 2006 appear unlikely at best.

Tinch Gone, Busby Missing From Roughrider Rookie Camp

While most rookies will carry over to Sunday's start to Roughrider training camp, some receivers have not. Josh Tinch has told coach Kent Austin his heart wasn't in it and after sitting out Friday's practice,...will head home. Also absent was Canadian Andrew Busby. "I don't know where he is right now" coach Austin said shortly after Friday's work-out at Mosaic Stadium. If Busby is in fact released, it'll mean just 4 rookie receivers will challenge for jobs come training camp.

The Real McKoy?

Top draft pick Dave McKoy has made it through his CFL rookie camp.

Upon Further Review

Some of you might recall hearing yours truly spouting off in a Drew Remenda Sports Show round-table this week that the arrival of Drew Tate would spell doom for all other rookie quarterbacks hoping to stick around past the final cutdown date. Well upon further review, I have been swayed to agree with the likes of Mitchell Blair, Warren Woods and Rob Vanstone that it's not quite that simple. Barring injury I still have no doubt the depth chart on the active roster will read in order of Kerry Joseph, Marcus Crandell and Drew Tate.
