The Edmonton Eskimos have made it official, hiring Roughrider defensive coordinator Richie Hall as their head coach.
"I have long admired Richie's abilities," says Eskimos general manager Danny Maciocia in a news release from the team, calling him an "excellent fit" for the organization.
Hall joined the Riders as a defensive back in 1988, earning a Grey Cup ring with the team in 1989. In 1993 he joined the team's coaching staff.
This season and in previous years, Hall has been interviewed a number of times for head coaching vacancies.

Ritchie
I would like to congratulate Ritchie on his new appointment. We will miss his leadership up in the booth and his calm demeanor. Our loss is Edmonton's gain.
Richie
No offense Ken, but there goes the man who should've been Kent Austin's replacement. Our defense is sure to suffer for this. Who is in line to replace Hall?
This could have been avoid
This could have been avoid by naming him our head coach...miller is not right for this team!
Way to go Richie. Hope you
Way to go Richie.
Hope you are kind to the Riders when the teams match up next year.
All the best when playing BC and Calgary.
You will be back to inducted into the Plaza someday.
Go for Richie
Glad to here Richie got the job in Edmonton fantastic. There is no coach in the CFL that deserves it more. Oh course he must know that love will be gone the first time the Esks visit next year.
this sucks
this sucks
A well desrved appointment
A well desrved appointment for the man responsible for our last cup. We had the best defense in the league under his guidance which is what made us the team that couldn't be beat.
It is a great loss to our team, but Richie deserves a promotion!
Good luck, I know you will miss the Rider Pride here...Edmonton may be a good organization, but the province does not bleed Green like here :-)
See you when you come back to be inducted into the Plaza!
hall
We will miss you Richie !! You deserve it ! almost 20 years as a Rider that job should have been yours after Shivers and Barret left.
best of luck!!
Tell me why it has to be this way?
Not being part of Eric's brain, I'm not sure what he saw in Richie that did NOT say Head Coach. Revolving doors are part of the game, but the 100,000 thousand or so people who continually support the Riders will be waiting with bated breath for a real answer. It seemed obvious to me that our defence was totally committed to the man and his plan. They were so focused on their part of the game that they never seemed to get bogged down with the fact that we had a misfiring offense – or an iffy head coach.
We will hope that Richie’s legacy will be a mature defence that will stick together and support whoever the new defensive coach might be.
Regardless, I would like to hear Eric tell us why Richie wasn’t good enough to keep, specifically why he wasn’t good enough to be made head coach last season. Saying our record without him as head coach was impressive is a cop out. The bottom line here is that we’ve now lost Richie Hal.
Thank you, Richie for your dedication to this league, this team and to this province. I don’t think I will be able to attend or watch our match-ups with the Eskies. I want so badly for you to over-achieve, it would be better for a year or so if I just didn’t watch.
Congratulations, good luck and God Bless! And thank you so very, very much, Mr. Hall!
best to you Richie
Well Riders we did it again. Best to you Richie. We should have kept Richie and let Ken Miller go. Go riders Go
