Family identifies remains found in burned car in Prince Albert

A Prince Albert family is searching for answers after they lost their son in a horrific incident early Saturday morning.

A car was found engulfed in flames in the West Flat at about 1 a.m. When the fire was put out, human remains were discovered.

The boy's mother, Fanny Ballantyne, confirms the remains are those of her 13-year-old son, Wayne Ballantyne.

She said the last few days have been very emotional for her as she waits for answers, she only knows what she has heard from people in the community.

Human remains found in burned car

Human remains are confirmed to be found in a burned vehicle over the weekend.

Prince Albert Police are reporting at about 1 a.m. on Saturday, a patrol unit saw a car fully engulfed in flames.

It was in a driveway in the 900 block of River Street West.

According to police, it was while they were trying to evacuate the residence for safety that officers noticed what looked like human remains in the car.

Prince Albert Fire Department was called and extinguished the fire. It was later verified that they were human remains.

Sandy Bay woman dies in police custody

A 39-year-old woman died while being held in custody at Sandy Bay.

The woman, who lived in the community, was found unresponsive in a prison cell at the Sandy Bay RCMP detachment Monday night. Paramedics were called but the woman was pronounced dead a short time later.

The Saskatoon Police Service Major Crime Unit is handling the investigation. It will report the results of their investigation to the Ministry of Justice.

Man dies after truck rolls on Highway 35

A truck drifted off Highway 35 Monday morning while travelling around a curve leaving the 65-year-old driver dead.

RCMP were first called to the scene around 8 a.m. after getting reports of a truck in a ditch. Officers say the truck rolled several times before coming to a stop on its side.

Charlie Machiskinic of the Yellow Quill First Nation was pronounced dead on the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

Assaulted woman attends alleged attacker’s hearing

For the first time since her brutal assault in Prince Albert, Marlene Bird attended her alleged attacker’s court appearance.

Seated in a wheelchar with a bandage over one of her eyes, a somber-looking Bird attended a scheduled hearing for Leslie Black at Prince Albert Provincial Court on Wednesday.

On June 1, Bird, 47, was discovered in a parking lot in downtown Prince Albert, burned and badly wounded.

13-year-old boy charged after northern school put on lockdown

 An elementary school in northern Saskatchewan was on lockdown Monday after a 13-year-old boy allegedly pointed an air pistol at a five-year-old boy.

It happened just after noon outside of the Bell’s Point Elementary School in Air Ronge.

As soon as staff knew about the situation, students were hurried inside and the school was put on lockdown, said Director of Education for the Lac La Ronge Indian Band Gerry Guillet.

Crash sidelines Sask. jiu jitsu athlete

Even though a Prince Albert man's life has been flipped upside down, jiu jitsu athlete Cody Bowman remains positive.

Bowman is still recovering from injuries he sustained on July 9 after being hit head-on by another vehicle. He said he was driving in his car alone down a grid road to see his girlfriend when his car was hit.

"I was back on my reserve at Ahtahkakoop [First Nation] and I was nicely driving and some drunk drivers hit me head on and I broke both the bones in my left leg,” Bowman said.

A Prince Albert family remains in limbo after Habitat for Humanity took steps to terminate their housing agreement.

Last month, Darlene Alexson received a letter from the charity saying she no longer qualified for a home, because a member of her family had repeated encounters with police and that did not meet their “vision of a Habitat partner family.”

Missing girl last seen at Prince Albert Super 8

A missing girl has police asking for the public's help.

Madison MacIntyre, 13, was last seen at the Super 8 motel on Friday at around 2 a.m.

According to the Prince Albert Police Service, she was reported missing a short time later.

MacIntyre is described as around five feet, five inches, 120 pounds and was last seen wearing black Saskatchewan Roughrider shorts and a grey Metallica T-shirt.

Class action still option for former Timber Bay students

People who attended a Montreal Lake school can still apply for class action after a provincial Court of Appeal's reversal, and a lawyer is considering suing the churches that ran it.

Timber Bay Children’s Home and Timber Bay School operated from 1952 to early 1992, with Metis students attending the day school and residence in the Montreal Lake area.
