With Big Win Comes Big Loss For Riders

Beat Argos; Lose Dressler

The Saskatchewan Roughriders jumped out to a 28-7 lead over the Toronto Argonauts on a chilly Saturday night at Mosaic Stadium. The Riders held on for a 32-22 win but were also losers on Saturday. 2008 CFL Rookie of the Year and the Riders leading receiver for 2009, Weston Dressler, was injured on the Riders second to last drive, with a severely sprained ankle.

Dressler caught a key first down pass that set up the Riders field goal late in the fourth quarter to make it a 10-point game and solidified the Riders win. But on the play, Dressler landed awkwardly on his left foot and was in severe discomfort in the locker room a half and hour after the game, with his ankle heavily wrapped.

"It's a huge win but a bitter loss," described a subdued Head Coach Ken Miller after the game, "To lose somebody of his stature... he really is instrumental in our offensive attack. To lose him is a big loss."

Miller said Dressler may actually have some broken bones but that will be determined on Saturday night as Dressler will get X-rays and further tests. Miller believes Dressler could be lost for two weeks but likely more.

Dressler was Darian Durant's favourite receiver on Saturday as Dressler caught five passes for 38 yards and a touchdown.

The Riders were rolling early, scoring a touchdown in four of their first five possessions, taking a 28-7 lead. But late in the first half, the Toronto Argonauts were aided by two pass interference calls, including one in the end zone. Two plays later, Kerry Joseph ran in for a one-yard touchdown.

The Argos were able to chip away at the lead in the second half as they closed the gap to just a touchdown difference with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. With the Riders pinned back to their 26-yard line with just under eight minutes left, Darian Durant led the team on a 14 play, 6:02 minute drive to score a field goal and stretch the lead to 32-22 with 1:32 left.

Former Rider Kerry Joseph couldn't muster any offense and time ran out on the Argos.

The win puts the Riders back into a tie with the Calgary Stampeders for first in the West, who take on the league leading Montreal Alouettes on Monday.

The Riders take on Calgary next week and no matter if Calgary wins or loses in Montreal, next week's game will be for sole spot of first place in the West.
